Therapy sessions successfully treat:

and many other related conditions

Anna specialises in treating older people, particularly people living with dementia.  Anna is now taking bookings for dementia therapy in October.

What is dementia?

Dementia is progressive cognitive decline.  It has hundreds of different causes, the most common of which is Alzheimer’s Disease – which is plaques and tangles on the brain which Alois Alzheimer described in 1907.

What is the difference between Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia?

This is the most commonly asked question as a dementia therapist I get asked.
Dementia is the umbrella term for progressive cognitive decline.  Alzheimer’s Disease is the main cause of dementia.  In other words Alzheimer’s Disease is a type of dementia.

What is ‘dementia therapy’?

There is no cure for dementia.  It is progressive – some symptoms will get worse.  However some of the symptoms which are often associated with dementia can be successfully treated with ‘dementia therapy’.

What is relaxation therapy?

It is guided meditation – usually with Anna Tatton’s voice guiding you through a relaxing and personalised meditation.

How does it work?

Most people don’t actually spend dedicated time relaxing.  Once they do, they find that their lives are often transformed as they tap into parts of the mind that they are not using or under using.  So, we are tapping into unused memories, your imagination, feelings, emotions and the autonomic nervous system which helps us relax.

How long does it last?

It depends on the individual and the circumstances.  One person may only need a couple of minutes to focus and relax – perhaps if they’re well practiced.  Others may need three hour long sessions.  Some may need regular sessions over a number of years.  The average is probably three hours over 6 weeks.  The positive effects are long lasting and sometimes permanent.

I didn’t think people with dementia could be helped – they can’t concentrate. Is that right?

Until very recently it was thought that little could be done to help people live well with dementia.  Now thanks to millions of pounds of research we know that we can do a lot to help people manage the condition in positive ways.  The techniques that Anna Tatton uses are shorter and easier to adopt, and perhaps most importantly of all – tailor made to that individual as each experience of dementia is unique.

What about people in later stages of dementia?

Anna Tatton’s techniques can help people live well with the condition at any stage – because they are tailor made and personalised to that individual.  Working with loved ones and professional carers Anna’s consultations and sessions can have a profound effect on wellbeing over a short time period.
